Gray Verses Grey

By Avalon Kelly

Ah, the age-old struggle.  You’re writing an essay for your English class and come upon the word ‘gray.’  Or…wait…is it ‘grey?’  This confounding question had perturbed me for quite some time when I finally decided to conduct some research on my own; I took to my trusty Google browser and typed “gray vs. grey” in the search bar.  The results shocked me—the answer is (usually) ‘gray.’  ‘Gray’ is the de facto American English spelling of this dull color.  However, when spelling the name of a British product—for example, the delicious Earl Grey Tea—one should use the British English spelling (‘grey’).  I hope this trusty guide provides relief for your mental struggles on how to correctly spell ‘gray.’
