Song of the Sea: A Heartwarming Tale

By Avalon Kelly

A young selkie, a missing mother, a magical world—Song of the Sea, directed by Tomm Moore, follows the journey of a 10-year-old boy to save his sister (and the world).  The entire film features hand-drawn animations of Irish folklore and is a perfect addition to your St. Patrick’s Day watchlist!  In vivid, whimsical detail, Moore puts an artistic spin on classic Irish tales to weave a story of perseverance and familial love.  The film opens with an Irish father and children (Ben and Saoirse) returning to their home by the sea after the tragic disappearance of their mother.  In anger, the father takes away Saoirse’s coat; little does he know, she is a selkie and needs the coat to survive.  This incident sparks Ben’s epic odyssey to return the selkie’s coat and reunite his family.  If you are a fan of traditional animation, this beautifully illustrated film is for you!  Song of the Sea is available to rent from Amazon Prime TV for $3.99.
