Every morning, every year. Gifts are opened, and we venture to the dining table where a steaming dish sits, ready for us to dig in. Every morning, every year. A spread of fruits and cinnamon rolls, with the star of the show on display in the middle: strata.
What is strata? Simply, strata is a life-changing, delicious, breakfast lasagna. Bread layered with melty cheese and spiced sausage, doused in scrambled egg and milk. Strata is a classic dish, at least in the Hanuska family, and served on Christmas, Easter, and as requested, my brother’s birthday.
If this sounds as delicious to you as it does me, here’s my family’s hit recipe:
Ingredients
- 16 slices bread (crust removed)
- 16 slices cheddar cheese
- 1 lb breakfast sausage, crumbled and cooked
- 6 eggs
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 cups milk
Directions
- Spray 9×13 glass pan.
- Butter bread. Place 8 slices butter down in pan.
- Place cheese on bread. Sprinkle ½ of meat on top.
- Lay 8 slices of bread, butter up.
- Add cheese. Sprinkle with remaining meat.
- Beat eggs, salt, and milk. Pour over. Cover and refrigerate overnight.
- Bake uncovered at 325° for 30-40 minutes.
- Serve hot!
