Christine Jung is a member of the school dance team whose passion for dance started long before she ever joined. In this interview, she opens up about her experiences on the team performances, the traditions that keep the team close, and the simple moments.
A: What made you want to join the dance team?
C: I wanted to join the dance team because I wanted to be involved in some way at school and I’ve been doing dance since I was a kid.
A: Do you remember your very first performance with the team?
C: Yeah, I believe the first performance I had with the team was at back to school night last year and we did “fight song”.
A: What’s your favorite style of dance to perform?
C: I’ve been doing ballet most so that’s my favorite style to perform but i’ve also started to learn more lyrical which I really enjoy.
A: Do you have a favorite routine you’ve done this year?
C: We haven’t done any routines yet but I am really excited for the first football game and rally.
A: How do you usually feel right before going on stage?
C: I feel like I get really nervous right before I go on stage especially if the floor is slippery but once I start to perform, I feel a lot more confident.
A: Do you have any pre-performance rituals or traditions?
C: Before every performance we get into a circle and have a group pep talk which always makes me feel better. We also do big and littles gift exchanges right before every football game.
A: What’s something most people don’t realize about being on the team?
C: I feel like something people don’t realize about being on the team is that everyone puts in a lot of effort behind every performance. To make it look good on stage, we have to perfect every choreo and technique because we only have one try to show our work.
A: What’s the funniest memory you have from practices or performances?
C: Going to Taco Bell before the Back to School Night performance.
A: Who on your team is the best at keeping everyone’s energy up?
C: I think Kirra is such a radiant person and she always gives everyone a compliment. Our captains are also very spirited and cheer us before we perform.
A: If you could choreograph any routine, what song would you choose?
C: Genie in a Bottle by Christina Aguilera.
