Marvelous Melodies #2

By Cambria Kelly

Hello and welcome back to my series, Marvelous Melodies! Same as last time, I’m going to shuffle my playlist, rate the first five songs, and clean out some less enjoyable tracks. In case you didn’t read part one from last issue, allow me to warn you: this playlist hasn’t been cleaned in over five years.

Playlist!

“Lives” by Modest Mouse – 9/10

It’s a pretty sad, existential crisis-inducing song, but I love that! This track shows off what Modest Mouse does best—reflecting on the human condition with melancholic words and experimental instrumentation. The somber tone is elevated by the ingenious blending of musical components. Couldn’t get much better than this in my opinion.

“Everybody Wants To Rule The World” by Tears for Fears – 7.2/10

No denying it, this song is well-loved. Instantly recognizable and fun, there’s not much to complain about. That being said… it has been played to death. Still, I can’t help but enjoy it when it comes on, so it won’t drop the score that much

“Drink” by The Happy Fits – 8.6/10

Strong contender here, I really love this artist. Their usual upbeat, energetic style is always a win. However, this song takes a more low-key approach, and it works so well. The melody is somber, the lyrics feel a bit more grounded, and it’s overall an enjoyable listen.

“Red” by Taylor Swift – 3/10

I had my Swiftie phase about three years ago and, unfortunately, I’ve fallen out of it—hard. So, apologies to all the Taylor fans, but this marks our first removal from my playlist. Her songs feel overplayed, and this track only reinforces that. I can still appreciate the lyricism and melody, but ultimately, the sound just doesn’t sit well with me anymore.

“It’s Tricky” by Run-DMC – 9.5/10

Ending on a high note with an absolute legend of a track. This song is timeless—never skipped, always sung. The energy is peak, and it’s basically impossible to be in a bad mood while listening to it. Totally a classic.

The verdict! (drumroll please)

My playlist might be chaotic, but it’s got range in my humblest unbiased opinion (it actually got shuffled this time, heh). Hopefully you found something worth a listen, and I’ll be back with more next issue.
