I Think You Know The Cardigans

By Braeden Gourley

You simply must know the drill by now. I think you the Swedish rock band The Cardigans, with original members recruiting lead singer Nina Persson to completely ratify their music forever. I list 5 tracks you might recognize. Go, go, go!

  1. “Lovefool”

Uh oh. I don’t think you have a chance to not know this one. “Lovefool” is quite arguably the most popular of pop-rock. A bit of the classic “happy, sad,” but I think the majority of listeners have misinterpreted this beat. However, the syrupy nature of Nina’s voice adds to the misunderstanding. On the plus side, if you really liked the contradiction of this song, you’ll be happy to learn that it was featured in Romeo + Juliet. Only for a few seconds, though it’s good enough.

  1. “My Favourite Game”

Ooh, and the music video is fascinating as well. Try to escape the magic of their ‘98 album Gran Turismo. You can’t because the “driving” metaphor of the “game” illustrates such a clear picture of the realization that you’ve wasted your time on fixing someone who was never there. If you like deep songs, I think I’ve tripped you up with this one. Don’t bother trying to deny your fabulous taste.

  1. “Step On Me”

Still haven’t given up, huh? Well, I have now trapped the TikTok addicts! This tune has been sped up and placed in creative animation clips or video game highlights to, well, highlight the portrayal of mistreating yourself for love. Even Nina herself claimed this staple of music incorporation to be “spot-on.” While not as upbeat as the others, it serves a high-energy purpose in conveying melancholy.

  1. “Erase/Rewind”

Ugh. Not a quitter, I suppose. Atmospheric, hypnotic, and electronic, “Erase/Rewind” hits the moody spot. A poignant reflection on restarting life, back to when relationships weren’t cool. The message on self-correction is obvious (are you losing yet?), and it’s taken with care, charisma, and more trippy introspection to swoop all of you fans off your feet. Bear with me.

  1. “Carnival”

What a drastically different album cover. Anyway, our final guest of the evening is most definitely not the most recognizable. Notwithstanding the lovely chords from the rest of these tunes, “Carnival” is a mesmerizing ride. See what I did there? Listening to this at an amusement park may seem appealing, but the constant repetition actually symbolizes, yet again, a common theme in all songs by The Cardigans: heartbreak. The technique this band has of trying not to catch you off-guard is impeccable, and similar to many 90s Indie Pop bands, they test rooting the message in the lyrics to test you. Will I still vibe? Must I still dance? Most certainly, but my groovy moves don’t change the fact that this band is near the epitome of representing the darkest side of human interaction . . . okay, don’t quote me on that, but I love these songs.
