Hidden in the heart of downtown Los Gatos, Los Gatos Cafe has become a local favorite for breakfast enthusiasts (like us!). Known for its cozy atmosphere and generous portions, the café offers a menu that caters to all sides of the brunchy world. Here’s our review of some of their acclaimed dishes!
Soufflé Omelettes
The soufflé omelettes at Los Gatos Café are a standout feature of their menu. Unlike traditional omelettes, these are light, fluffy, and voluminous—big enough to share with a friend. The texture is airy, almost like a cloud, yet sturdy enough to hold a variety of fillings. Whether you prefer a classic cheese omelette or something more adventurous like spinach, feta, and sun-dried tomatoes, the customization options are endless. What’s more, the eggs are cooked to perfection, with a delicate balance of richness and freshness. The portion size is generous, making it a satisfying meal that won’t leave you hungry an hour later, especially considering the plentiful sides that it comes with—which takes us over to the potatoes!
Herb Potatoes!
The exclamation point felt necessary—these crispy potatoes are undoubtedly that good. No breakfast at Los Gatos Café is complete without a side of their freshly seasoned spuds. These golden-brown cubes are cooked to a perfect crunch, with a savory, aromatic blend of herbs and spices that enhance their natural taste without overpowering them. And when we say crunch, we mean a beautiful caramelized crust on both sides of the potatoes, brutally smashed until the crisp takes up maximum surface area. It’s so otherworldly that we can quite literally hear the sizzle of the pan with every bite. However, they do miss once in a blue moon—for whatever reason, they choose to leave the potatoes barely smashed on some days. Tragic. Regardless, they’re the ideal accompaniment to pancakes, omelettes, or even a simple avocado toast.
Cinnamon Rolls
If you like sweets, or honestly even if you don’t, the cinnamon rolls at Los Gatos Café are a must-try (like seriously!). These are certainly the best buns we’ve ever had, and an impeccable weekend-only treat. They’re gooey in a perfect brownie kind of way, somehow soft and pillowy and chewy without any hint of being undercooked. And, as someone who can’t handle anything too sweet, this bun does a delicious job of balancing out its sugar-spice ratio in the just-right amount of cinnamon sugar. The hidden star, however, is the cinnamon butter that accompanies the rolls. It’s smooth, creamy, and lightly sweetened, adding a luxurious touch to every bite—and a tiny hint of salt only adds to the rich layers of flavor. Whether you’re stopping by for breakfast or a mid-morning treat, these incredible cinnamon rolls are worth every penny.
Raspberry Coffee Cake
While the raspberry coffee cake has received praise from some customers, it didn’t quite live up to the hype for me. We came on a weekday (forgetting cinnamon rolls are only served on the weekends) and ordered the cake at the server’s recommendation. The pastry is moist and has a pleasant raspberry swirl, however the flavor palate didn’t quite suit our taste. That said, coffee cakes are subjective—especially because we didn’t have a side of fragrantly bitter coffee to contrast the sweetness—and those with a love for fruity, special pastry will still enjoy it. If you’re on the fence, it’s worth trying—but don’t expect it to steal the show like the café’s other offerings.
As Los Gatos residents, we proudly claim the Los Gatos Cafe as one of our own, deserving of every right to its glorious name. They have a few too many perfect things that hit every time and keep us pestering our friends and family to go with us, and such an extensive menu it’s hardly likely we’ll ever get to every item. But if you’re taking one thing away from this review, go get yourself a Los Gatos Cafe cinnamon roll this weekend. We’ll be there too.
