With lines stretching across three storefronts on a busy day, Cupertino’s Izumi Matcha is undeniably a local hotspot for a morning boost or afternoon pick-me-up. The menu redefines the classic Japanese drink in various unique fashions, including fruity lychee and creamy cheese mousse. We ordered some of the cafe’s most popular items to give them a try, and they did not disappoint.
Soft Serve (Matcha and Sesame Swirl) – 9.5/10
The nutty sesame paired beautifully with the earthy matcha, creating a flavor profile that was both satisfying and sophisticated. What impressed us most was the smooth yet slightly gritty texture of the sesame—a telltale sign of how fresh and unprocessed the ingredients were, with a subtle flavor that built up delightfully over time. The refined matcha was a nice contrast with a perfect dusting on top, striking that ideal balance of not too sweet and not too bitter, making every spoonful a treat.
Crème Brûlée Matcha Swirl – 9/10
According to Izumi itself, this drink is the #1 seller of the cafe, and we can see why. The smooth, chilly base was perfectly executed—a milky matcha melded with snowflaked ice, complemented by a slight sweetness that didn’t overpower. Unlike a typical blended ice drink, this matcha maintained its creaminess and texture even after a long period of time, far surpassing our expectations. The crème brûlée component delivered a strong blast of matcha paired with an extra creamy texture that caught us off guard in the best way. This dessert struck a beautiful balance between indulgent and refreshing, making it the perfect way to end a meal.
Honey Hojicha Latte – 8.5/10
This latte went down so fluidly and effortlessly, with a lovely roasted flavor that lingered in all the right ways. Our choice to substitute with oat milk added a creamy richness that enhanced the nutty palate—an unbeatable combination. The hojicha itself was unlike any other we’ve tasted, with an almost floral quality that elevated it beyond your typical matcha beverage. It’s the kind of drink that fills you from tongue to tummy with indescribable bliss while still feeling light and refreshing.
