Cranberry Cravings

By Cambria Kelly

What’s the most underrated dish at the holiday table, you ask? The clear and undeniable answer to this is most certainly cranberry sauce. Now, I’m sure a few of you raised your eyebrows and cocked your heads at that, but let me explain the glorious tradition in my house that sets this side apart from all the rest.

Let me start with this—we don’t buy our cranberry sauce. That’s disgraceful and far, far, far inferior. We use a recipe perfected by years of use and careful experimentation:

-1 bag of cranberries

-1 green apple

-1 cup of brown sugar

-¼ cup of apple juice

-1 ½  tsp of ginger

-1 ½ tsp of cinnamon

As you boil it down, the cozy aroma permeates through the air of our home. Take it fresh from the stove and serve—simple, but impossibly delicious.

The magic of this recipe lies in its perfect balance. It’s not too tart, not too sweet, but hits that ideal middle ground that makes you go back for thirds (and fourths, if we’re being honest.) The texture is unparalleled—thick enough to feel homemade and substantial, but smooth enough to spread beautifully across your turkey or mix into your stuffing (we mostly eat it straight from a bowl though.) The green apple adds a subtle tartness that cuts through the richness of the brown sugar, while the ginger and cinnamon bring warmth and depth that store-bought versions could never dream of achieving.

Every single time we serve this at Thanksgiving, without fail, someone asks for the recipe. It’s become such a tradition that we now expect it—guests will take their first bite, pause mid-chew with wide eyes, and immediately ask what makes it so different from the grossly gelatinous canned stuff they’re used to. We’ve converted countless cranberry sauce skeptics into dedicated believers with this recipe alone. It’s so good, in fact, that we can’t limit ourselves to making it just once a year. Between Thanksgiving and Christmas, we make it over ten times—for dinners, potlucks, gifts, and honestly, sometimes just because we crave it. It’s become less of a holiday side dish and more of a seasonal obsession in our household, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. And, as thanks for reading to the end of my review, here’s a true embodiment of the joy this meal brings. I present to you: my brother.
