What is your piece titled?
Care Bear Portal
How long do you think it took you to make this art?
About 10 class periods so about 13 hours.
What is your favorite part about this piece?
I love how vibrant the colors are, I feel like they match the colors of the real Care Bear Kingdom really well. I also like how realistic and proportional it is.
What was a challenge in creating this ?
Keeping it balanced and avoiding it becoming top heavy was very challenging. I had to thin out the clay multiple times and up size the base to keep it steady.
What medium did you use to create this artwork?
Clay and Acrylic.
What is the meaning behind your artwork?
This was a functional nonsense artwork meaning we literally combined two random things into one. It follows the DADA art movement that is supposed to be abstract, controversial, and straight forward/non up for interpretation.
What was the inspiration behind this piece?
Even though it was two random things (a faucet and care bears) combined, I did want to channel my inner little girl. This one appealed to me because I have memories of playing with my moms little care bear figurines from when she was a kid. I wanted to make a little “portal” from care bear kingdom to our world just because it’s whimsical.
What do you hope viewers will take away from this artwork?
I hope it makes them smile and reminisce on their childhood because life moves really fast. And I hope they slow down a little and look for the little magical parts of our world. There is so much to find and observe and so much joy you can find from the smallest things.
What was the process like in creating this piece?
I had to trust the process because just the form looked pretty silly at first. But as I slowly started adding the splashes of water, the details in the faucet, and the bears, it really came together and started to look realistic.
Who is your favorite artist and why?
Katie McGowan makes paintings out or acrylic using small wavy lines. I think it is amazing how she can create so much detail with lines of solid color that look like they should be messy (because they are wavy) but it looks perfect in the end. It is mesmerizing to look at because it feels like a whirlpool or ripples that draw you in. She also uses beautiful color pallets.
