Roman’s Empire #6: Capitão Fausto

By Roman Soto

Have you ever pressed shuffle on your playlist, and the repetitive nature of the unchanging musical genre plays continuously on your listening device? Well, my fellow music lovers, you’ve just stumbled upon a place to expand your musical taste. Welcome to Roman’s Empire, your new favorite music column. My job here is to persuade you to add the suggested artist to your playlist. Here, we delve into some of music’s most captivating artists from all over the world. It’s simple: find a comfortable chair and prepare for the expansion of your musical knowledge. Today, we dive into the brilliant elements that frame INOHA’s dazzling portrait.

Formed in 2009, Capitão Fausto joined together around the idea of expressing their music through psychedelic rock. From wild teenagers in a cover band to commercial rockstars, Tomás Wallenstein, Manuel Palha, Domingos Coimbra, and Salvador Seabra Capitao Fausto fused mainstream sounds of bands such as The Beatles’ drumming style, The Rolling Stones’ bend, and the Sex Pistols’ gnarly riffs to formulate an independent sound like no other. A majority of their riffs include a bright, airy guitar sound, perfect for a summer road trip. Below are some of my favorite songs by them and brief descriptions.

“Amanha Tou Melhor”

Released in 2015 as the best song on their sophomore album, “Capitão Fausto Têm os Dias Contados” “Amanha Tou Melhor” which translates to “Tomorrow I’ll be better” adventurously guides the listener through an array of different sounds native to Portugal but also presenting their ability to fuse modern Western sounds.

“Corazon”

If you like Mac Demarco’s dreamy guitar, you will love “Corazon”. The bouncy sensation Manuel Palha emits creates an atmosphere of freedom and an openness to explore each individual instrument of the song. Simple, yet perfect, the drum kit carefully fosters the medium pace of the jam.

“Semana em Semana”

Piano! Just when you thought that the piano was a classical instrument made only for soap operas, Capitao Fausto introduces it as the guiding element in this brilliant tune. As if you were in a 1900’s western saloon, this instrumental addition to the song truly gives Capitao Fausto their unique musical identity.
