In Vogue: Maria Eloina Villegas Tenorio

By Emi Gruender

Señora Villegas, located in Room 48, is one of our beloved Spanish teachers here at Westmont High School. Often clad in the most fashionable sweaters or scarves, us students here at Westmont have been wondering: what drives Señora’s fashionable taste? Join us on a visit to her charming room, and sit down for a chat.

What do you like to wear on a daily basis?

VILLEGAS:  “I wear the sweaters that I made for myself. I’ve been knitting for 25 years. I love to knit for myself, because I love what I create. The same scarf I made for me, I made for my favorite cousin. When she passed, now that scarf is very important to me. It’s a winter scarf, looks like a Scottish tartan.”

INTERVIEWER: Wait, what’s a tartan?

A kilt! Every family in Scotland has a different design for their skirts.

INTERVIEWER: Do you have any go-to outfits?

I love vests because it keeps me warm but not too warm. Vests are the best and I need more. Ehh… mis botas amarillas son muy cómodas. (Translation: My yellow boots are very comfortable.)

How did you develop your style?

It took me years to develop my style because for years, I wore items out of my mother’s closet; it was my mother’s clothing. When I started working, I learned I could choose my own things, very different from my mother’s.

Do you have any style role models?

A French teacher of mine wore amazing plaid skirts, and because she’s French, she just looks amazing. Nice scarfs, classic look.

Do you have any fashion-related comments?

I hate heels. Heels? I hate. Don’t torture yourself. Come down to earth, ladies. I could benefit from some (Señora Villegas stands at 5”1’). Comfort is my flag.
