Ferret-Legging

By Lili Metanovic

In the unique sport known as ferret-legging, competitors put live ferrets inside their pants to test how long they can endure the pain and movement of the ferret. Competitors have to deal with the ferrets’ sharp claws and fangs while having their pants tied at the waistband and ankles, so the ferret is unable to escape. Participants risk being bitten and scratched because protective clothing, including underwear, is prohibited. It is a true test of determination and pain tolerance, as the winner is the one who stays with the ferrets the longest while they are crawling through their pants.

It is thought that the sport started in England, amongst Yorkshire coal miners who supposedly made the practice into a challenge by using ferrets to manage rodent populations. The sport became a fun game for the miners as it offered an outlet for laughs during their tiresome occupations. Prior to the 1970s, ferret-legging was unknown until retired poacher Reg Mellor made it famous by setting a record of five hours and twenty-six minutes with a ferret in their pants. Even though it is no longer as popular, the sport is still seen at some particular festivals and competitions. Ferret-legging is nevertheless a sign of the life that humans live; some would consider it crazy, while others see it as fun.
