Take Two On The Chia Seeds

By Kathryn Tanaka

The first time I tried chia seeds, I wasn’t a fan. The slimy texture clashed with the weird seedy taste to make a godawful sensation for my taste buds. But that is no longer my stance on the pudding!

This time, I tried chia seed pudding from a seemingly trustworthy smoothie place, Palmetto in Santana Row. I got the Warrior Blend, which included a mango/spirulina smoothie-like base. The bowl included many toppings, some of which were fruits, granola, shredded coconut and honey. The real star of the show was the Butterfly Pea Flower chia seed pudding. First, the pudding was very smooth, which I was a major fan of. If it was crunchy I don’t think I would’ve eaten the entire bowl. Trying the topping on its own, the flavor was faintly sweet and much easier to swallow than my homemade version because the flavor was subtler. Paired with the fruits, granola, and other flavors, it integrated nicely and I admired how Palmetto has selected which tastes will work well together.

I will definitely be eating more chia seed pudding, but I’ll have to improve my homemade recipe first because you won’t find me paying $8 again for a smoothie bowl. Anyways, I guess this goes to show that you should probably give things a second chance if you don’t initially like it, or just things you made yourself (if you’re a bad cook).
