Good Grief Golden Globes

By Keira De Vita

The Golden Globes were truly nothing special this year. Overall, the event approached rather quickly due to ill advertising. Although it came and went, moments from the show pop up on social media here and there; some moments worth groaning at, applauding to, and others to celebrate.

It seems as though in the past ten years award shows have turned into something less memorable than they were in prior years. Reflecting, the only thing that truly “saves” the show or significantly advertises the show are these big moments. Whether a celebrity throws a fit for losing, an actor slaps someone, or someone shows up in a horrendous outfit, Golden Globes, the “big moment” is awarded to Jo Koy and his horrendous hosting job at this year’s show. The jokes weren’t funny, and he took the money… absolutely no one knew what to say. Watching clips from not only his monologue but segments of his performance, a visual pain echoed throughout the crowd the entire night. Most notably, Koy abruptly destroyed the night when taking a “comedic” jab at the unseriousness of the entire Barbie versus Oppenheimer competition, explaining their distinct differences. When in reality he just painted himself as an unfunny man, insulting a movie (Barbie) that attempted to exploit exactly what Koy displayed. You know you have done something wrong when Ryan Gosling glares at you… Secondly came the comedian’s joke surrounding Taylor Swift. As the pop star took a sip of her drink to shake it off, the rest of the audience stared at Koy baffled. With the excuse of “getting the show 10 days prior,” the media blew up with a trend of them coming up with their own jokes in 60 seconds. Although the Globes does write some of the jokes, Koy is now responsible for saying them. Hopefully, he learned his lesson.

With almost 30 awards, shows as lengthy as the Globes can be boring. But this year, each category had quite the competition and variety of nominees. Notably, Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour film is the first ever concert film to be nominated for any type of Globes award. The category was tough as it was alongside films such as Barbie, John Wick: Chapter Four, and many others. Viewers witnessed the resurgence of Ryan Gosling’s musical career when winning Best Song for “I’m Just Ken,” after his last victory for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy Film for his performance in La La Land.

A very notable segment of the show was when actress, Lily Gladstone won Best Actress, becoming the first indigenous person to earn this award. Hearts were filled and a message was spread when the actress delivered her acceptance speech on stage. Hopefully, next year’s globes rethink their scripted jokes a little better before they embarrass themselves, and rising (or plummeting) comedian Jo Koy. On the other hand, I personally hope to see a resurgence in good films this coming year (as well as rom-coms!!!) with more press and excitement surrounding the release dates.
