There’s nothing worse than chomping down on an alleged oatmeal raisin cookie and finding out it’s a chocolate chip cookie. I love oatmeal raisin cookies. They’re the perfect texture, made with the most immaculate flavors, and can be eaten at all times.
While chocolate chip cookies have many varieties of textures, oatmeal raisin cookies’ is arguably better. Crunchy on the outside but perfectly chewy on the inside; the different texture from the raisins provides a nice change every few bites. Additionally, the oatmeal in oatmeal raisin gives it a granola, almost “healthy” feeling. I love the fall-apart, crumbly texture that can easily be spread over ice cream or yogurt.
That brings me to flavor. The flavor of oatmeal raisin cookies are objectively better than chocolate chip. Maybe I don’t like chocolate chip, or maybe they’re just better. Likely the latter, since anyone who doesn’t like raisins doesn’t deserve to be eating cookies in the first place. Sweet yet balanced with a touch of salt and savory from the oats, oatmeal raisin cookies have a diverse, complex flavor unchallenged by chocolate chip. Unlike the simple, basic chocolate, spread out unevenly throughout the dessert, oatmeal raisin has a sophisticated palette during the entire eating process.
Similarly, when asking my peers about why they prefer chocolate chip, their main argument was “it’s chocolate, duh.” However, if I wanted chocolate, I would just… eat chocolate. The chocolate that’s in chocolate chip cookies isn’t even that good, I much prefer consuming a better-quality chocolate bar. To add, if I’m going to be making the effort to bake cookies, I might as well put in the work for oatmeal raisin rather than a plain chocolate chip. It results in a more satisfying bite, a better cookie, and since many companies (sadly) do not produce a good gluten-free oatmeal raisin cookie, it automatically expands my treat options.
Finally, oatmeal raisin cookies just feel healthier. I can somewhat convince my lovely mother to let me have an oatmeal raisin cookie for breakfast, but that wouldn’t fly with one of the chocolate chip variety. I can munch on so many more oatmeal raisin cookies without getting tired of them or feeling sick because they’re obviously significantly superior.
Despite the strong arguments for chocolate chip cookies, clearly, oatmeal raisin cookies are the tastier, better option because of their diverse palette and texture, and versatility. Oatmeal raisin cookies >>> chocolate chip cookies.
