Setting the Barre

By Isabella Brady

Integrating elements of yoga, pilates and dance, barre is an intuitive, full-body workout that can be conducted in classes at a gym, or YouTube videos from your house. Leveraging small, measured movements to tone muscle groups, barre may at first seem easy, however, it only takes a few minutes to realize the contrary. While barre typically uses steps from ballet with the aid of a physical ballet barre, many of the exercises can be performed without one. With lowered impact to joints, the form of exercise proves very beneficial to people of all ages. I first tried barre in 6th grade, and since then I have been most impressed by the flexibility and core strength it provides. If you’re looking for a high intensity workout, I recommend taking out a yoga mat and giving barre a try.
