“So all you eat are vegetables and leaves?”
“How do you get protein? I would die if I became vegan!”
“Try some of this chicken. Are you never gonna eat meat in your life again? I could never!”
The countless ignorant questions have gone out of hand. Many individuals immediately assume that vegans only consume vegetables, salads, and fruits.
veg·an
/ˈvēɡən/
noun
a person who does not eat any food derived from animals and who typically does not use other animal products.
adjective
eating, using, or containing no food or other products derived from animals.
As a matter of fact, I am friends with a vegetarian that eats cupcakes, pizza, and pretty much any food a typical person would eat with a few modifications. No, vegetarian cupcakes are not made with vegetables! They are made with cruelty-free whip cream, milk, and unbleached all-purpose flour, similar to any other cupcake out there.
Vegans and vegetarians are judged by the stereotypes persistent in society and there is a certain ignorance when it comes to understanding vegetarians. For instance, people always say “is salad all you eat” and obviously the answer is no. Even though I do not consume chicken or meat, I do eat eggs, which act as a great source of protein. At the end of the day, vegans and vegetarians know the truth and are amused because they know that, in reality, they eat healthy and eat some really delicious foods.
People often believe that if you don’t consume any sort of meat you will eventually get sick, but that’s not the case. Through research, it has been proven that people can live a plant-based lifestyle. As a matter of fact, it has been mentioned that consuming red meat such as pork, beef, and lamb is a potential cause of bowel cancer. It should be known that being vegan or vegetarian is not a diet but a lifestyle that could benefit many people.
You eat your food and I’ll eat my leaves, thank you!
