Darin’ Dolly Parton

By Anjali Nayak

Dolly Parton is a country icon. Her album The Grass Is Green remains one of the greatest country albums to ever exist. Even better than country music? She makes country AND pop music! Setting the foundations for later hybrid musicians such as Taylor Swift, Brandi Carlile, Carrie Underwood, and Shania Twain. Dolly Parton is known as one of the most charitable figures despite her old age. Dolly Parton was elected to replace a Confederate statue, but her humility got the best of her. Parton turned down the honor. Moreover, Dolly has her very own amusement park, dubbed Dollywood.

Dolly Parton’s beginnings were harsh, as she grew up very very poor. However, that doesn’t stop Dolly! One of the greatest songwriters to ever walk the face of the earth, she wrote two of her biggest hits in the same session. Parton wrote the 1968 hit, “I Will Always Love You” and “Jolene” in the same sitting. Although “I Will Always Love You” would later be popularized by Whitney Houston, both of the songs reached the top of the charts and cemented her as a global icon.
