In this issue of the shield, we bring to you the wonderful world of John Tavernakis, known across Westmont for his sandals, Hawaiian shirts, and love for teaching Spanish.

What was your favorite class in high school and why?

Trigonometry, as it came very easy to me

What extracurricular activities were you involved in?

Key club and Tennis

Who were your favorite bands/artists/songs while in high school?

The Beastie Boys, Guns N Roses, and Poison

What was your favorite novel?

The Catcher in the Rye

What is your least favorite memory of high school?

Making the religion teacher cry

What was your first car?

Porsche 911

Did you ever have to go to the dean’s or principal’s office? Why?

Yes, though I prefer to leave the past in the past

What is your favorite Spanish speaking city/country?

Pamplona, Spain 

What is the best part of the UCSB campus?

Having all students live in same area

What is your favorite Clint Eastwood movie?

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly and Dirty Harry

What is your favorite fashion trend?

The tracksuit

What are your top three Greek islands?

Syros, Andros, and then Zakynthos

What has been your funniest encounter/conversation with a student?

Once a student asked me to translate tortilla into English (it was a Latino student)
