Yearner’s Playlist

By Maliah Grote and Kaia Lee

“Lover, You Should’ve Come Over”- Jeff Buckley

  • This is a classic yearner’s song about needing love and waiting for a lover to return.

“Thinking of You”- Katy Perry

  • This song is about trying to move on, but being stuck on someone who will never choose you back. The lyrics “You said move on, where do I go? I guess second best is all I will know,” hit hard, describing how you will never be someone’s first choice.

“Casual”- Chappell Roan

  • This song is about being in a “casual relationship” and valuing someone more than they value you. It leaves the question: is a relationship ever casual? Would not recommend listening to this one if you are currently in a talking stage.

“Silver Springs (Remastered 1997)”- Fleetwood Mac

  • This song is about trying to love someone who doesn’t want your love, and how your love can haunt them.

“The Only Exception”- Paramore

  • This song is about overcoming childhood trauma and the fear of heartbreak. To believe in love and let someone into your life, you must be vulnerable to show that you trust them.

“begged”- Olivia Rodrigo

  • “begged” is about the realization that affection and basic attention lose their value when you have to beg for it, especially from a romantic partner. It explores the impact it has on your self-worth when you have to ask for the bare minimum in a relationship.

“Soccer Practice”- Lizzy McAlpine

  • This song looks into the tension between romanticizing a “perfect” future with kids and a house, while recognizing that a relationship is ultimately wrong for you. It shows the importance of a moment where McAlpine wishes for a clean breakup since she doesn’t have the strength to do it herself, something many experience.

Here are more songs about yearning!

  • “Better Than This”- Lizzy McAlpine
  • “Futile Devices”- Sufjan Stevens
  • “less”- Olivia Rodrigo
  • “logical”- Olivia Rodrigo
  • “All Too Well (10-minute version)”- Taylor Swift
  • “Pushing it Down and Praying (Live in Amsterdam)”- Lizzy McAlpine
