Angel by Lizzy McAlpine

By Samhita Holla

Lizzy McAlpine’s latest album, Angel, contains fourteen songs of pure amazingness. In fact, ranking the tracks feels impossible since most of the songs should be tied for first place. With that in mind, here are my thoughts on her newest album!

1. “Over country”

I don’t think words could describe how beautiful this song is. It’s a soft song, yet it has deep lyrics. The instrumentals, of course, contribute to its ethereality. The tune, the lyrics, and the music video are all beautiful—what else could a song need?

2. “Ugly things”

I wish I could listen to this song 24/7! The beat drop really solidifies my positive thoughts on this song. The music video is super cute as well!

3. “A car wash and a new pair of pants”

Could this album get any better? I love this style of music! It’s a little different from her other songs, and I am loving it. The way she sings “get a car wash and a new pair of pants” is so satisfying. She really shows off her talent here with the way she effortlessly hits the higher notes.

4. “The light in the painting”

I just looked down, and I’m surprised to see that I’m still on the ground. I can’t even pinpoint one feature of the song that makes me feel like I’m floating. Either way, from the very first word to the last, this song is an absolute masterpiece.

5. “The moon”

As soon as the song started, I knew this was going to be one of my favorites. Listening to the various sound effects and background vocals when she sings “the moon” makes me feel so content.

6. “I have a friend”

The main thing that stands out about this song is its hopeful and loving lyrics. The acoustic solo at the end of the song, as well as the constant whistling, makes this song very eerie (but in the best way possible).

7. “Angel”

Now I am actually floating, listening to this amazing guitar. Lizzy McAlpine’s signature beat drop hits every single time!

8. “The crowd”

This song is about her late dad. It’s so sweet and encapsulates so many emotions at once. The main lines, “I make it big so you can hear the crowd,” and “Everything I do, I do so I can make you proud,” are sung so beautifully.

9. “Mason’s song”

I love this song, but it sounds the same as the other songs on this album. The chorus is really good, but sometimes I get bored and skip the song halfway through.

10. “Two elevens”

I don’t have much to say about this song. It sounds pretty similar to some of her other songs, and there’s nothing really that special about it.

11. “Soldier of the road”

I have to admit that I didn’t listen to Fleet Foxes before “Soldier of the road.” However, I was pleasantly surprised, because Fleet Foxes’ voice blends and harmonizes so well with Lizzy McAlpine’s. The only reason this song is not higher up is that it sounds repetitive, and in some parts, dull.

12. “Peach”

This song is definitely growing on me. However, I was eagerly waiting for the song to go somewhere or for the beat to drop, but neither of those things happened.

13. “Anybody’s fool”

Unfortunately, I’m a little bored listening to this song.

14. “Our strange ways”

This song is 7 minutes too long. It gets really creepy at the end, and the scuffling of feet and background laughter scares me every time. The beginning is good, but then it just gets spooky.
