Willows

By Madeline Tanaka

We were two willows, roots entwined

Bending not in the wind, but in time

You held to the earth I couldn’t touch

A love so strong, a love so deep

I hate to say it makes me weep

Our laughter grew like the vines that climb

A ladder reaching into the summer sky

But you packed your roots to try

The soil of a distant land

As August comes with whispered plans

I stood on the edge, my branches felt bare

Watching the current pull you without care

And the river sang a lullaby

Of cities bright and futures new

Of echoes of halls and books to chew

Yet in your hollow, where our names show

A scar in the bark from not so long ago

I left a knot, a secret tie

A knot that only time would know

I won’t ever be able to see you go

You’ll always be my other half

Even when the world feels wide and vast

When the moon pulls at the stretching tide

And autumn strips the willows bare

I whisper your name like a prayer in the air

You are my bridge, now I’m yours too

Time slips away with the morning dew
