SF Giants: There’s nothing like it?

By Cameron Kobara

The San Francisco Giants are entering a new era with Tony Vitello as their new manager, but things aren’t exactly going according to plan. The Giants ended their 2025 season with a 81-81 record—making it the fourth consecutive year that the Giants have had a record in the 79-81 win range—It felt like the Giants were only a few pieces away from an actual winning record. However, as of the start of the 2026 season it feels like that couldn’t be further from the truth as the team sits dead last in the NL West., fans’ stress levels are through the roof, but the story isn’t all bad.

The season opened with a devastating three-game sweep from the New York Yankees, with the Giants being outscored 13-1. Logan Webb made his fifth consecutive opening day start but his performance shocked fans and experts alike as he surrendered six earned runs—five in the second inning alone. The Giants were shut out in all three games against the Yankees, only attaining a total of five hits and one run.

San Francisco made a slight rebound against the Padres, winning two of three games, until dropping the ball in three of four games against the Mets. The Giants bullpen faces recurring issues. In the series finale against the New York Mets, Star pitcher Logan Webb had seven strong innings until relief pitchers Keaton Winn and Erik Miller gave up four runs, blowing the lead for San Francisco. The small amount of success the Giants have had this season can be attributed to Willy Adames, Matt Chapman, and Logan Webb. The pieces are there, they just aren’t clicking together.

One of the Giants biggest weaknesses this season is new manager Tony Vitello, who is the first manager in MLB history to be hired from a college program without any professional coaching experience, meaning there is quite a big learning curve for Vitello. However, despite the disappointing start, were only 12 games in and as Logan Webb has said: “Before anyone hits the panic button, take a deep breath.”
