Legacy Beyond the Office, Mrs. Wesson

By Mason Vargas

Miriam Wesson is an incredible counselor and inspiration who has served for years, leaving a lasting impact at Westmont. I’ve had the privilege of talking to, and getting advice from, Wesson, throughout my four years at Westmont. Through interactions and my own conversations with her, she is the most sincere and supportive counselor; she has always supported students, and helped many reach their fullest potential, and encourages her students to strive for successes. The retirement of Wesson leaves a mark of a true legacy at Westmont High School. Thank you, Wesson, for all of your hard work over the years and your impact on students, myself included.

Years in the educational industry:

“About 28, 21 years as a Spanish teacher, 7 years as a counselor”

Roughly how many students did you serve as a counselor for?

“I am not sure but my alpha split can be from 350 to 400 per year.”

How many years were you a counselor at Westmont?

“7 years”

How will you spend your retirement?

“Traveling, hiking, relaxing, reading, sleeping in and family!”

What is your favorite memory at Westmont?

“I started in 2019, the year of the pandemic. Somehow we managed to keep education running in spite of the predicament that the world found itself in. ”

“The spectacular team that I work with”

What will you miss about Westmont?

“The students, they keep me young and always on my toes, waiting for the next adventure/situation.”

What did students teach you?

“I learned something every day from students. Kindness, patience, curiosity, compassion and so many more things.”

Why did you want to work in a high school setting?

“This age group is the best. I help them plan their futures, I help them build their futures, I help them take a peek into their futures and I don’t have to be a fortune teller to do this!”

What advice do you want to give to students reading this?

“You don’t have to have it all figured out now. Be smart with your choices, try new things, travel, get moving towards your future endeavors because life goes quickly.”

Any words you want to share?

“May your futures be totally tubular!!”
