CA State Thespian Festival Recap

By Ruby King & Logan Mendelson

From March 14 to March 16, Westmont thespians attended the California State Thespian Festival and accomplished some amazing feats! Under the impeccable leadership of festival coordinator and thespian officer board member, junior Ruby King, students were able to come together for this annual celebration of theatre. At CSTF, thespians from all over the state have the chance to compete in different categories (both technical and acting) and get graded by industry professionals. This year we brought 23 amazing thespians with us and they did not disappoint! Here are some of the amazing feats that Westmont thespians achieved over the weekend:

  • Ruby King won 2nd place for her stage management of the Odyssey and won Outstanding Thespian in Scenic Crew
  • Margaret Donley won 3rd place for her light design of the Odyssey
  • Alex Lin won 3rd place for her prop construction for the Odyssey and won Outstanding Thespian in House Crew (she also was awarded a scholarship!)
  • Logan Mendelson won 2nd place for his Short Film
  • Emi Gruender won 3rd place in playwriting for her script, and got to perform in front of 1,800 people when she got chosen for Judges Choice Award for her performance of Lost in the Brass!
  • And shout out to Romy Leiba who attended from Leigh with the Westmont troupe and won 3rd place for stage management
  • The above students, along with Otra Phillips and Zoe Rosales also achieved Superior ratings, the highest rating achievable, for their thespys!

Congrats to all the amazing thespians at Westmont (and Leigh)!! In addition to these wonderful achievements, all students in attendance were treated to a weekend full of inspirational mainstage performances, thought-provoking workshops with industry professionals, and an all-around good time surrounded by likeminded young artists! Great work Troupe 2904, and great work Westmont Warriors!
