Teacher of the Year 2026

By Madeline Tanaka

Each year at Westmont High School, one teacher is selected as the Teacher of the Year. This teacher is the epitome of what it means to be a Westmont Warrior, empowering, supporting, and encouraging their students to better themselves and the school as a whole. George Palau of the Spanish department has been selected as the 2026 Teacher of the Year, a role in which countless teachers and students believe he deserves. Fellow Spanish teacher Jenee Fawson adds, “George is always willing to help out; he is super positive.” Here is what Palau has to say about taking on this honor.

Q: How does it feel to win Teacher of the Year?

A: Frankly, I’m a bit spooked.  How does one live up to that?  I figure that the best way I can do it is to keep doing the daily work of a teacher, a colleague and a friend.  I love Westmont; this is a very special place, and I don’t ever want to take this gift for granted!

Q: What do you enjoy about working at Westmont?

A: This is a positive place of growth.  We’re all working hard to reach our students to do the best they can in their lives, and that’s not easy.  However, Westmont does it with a smile, a kind word and a true effort.  Our staff and faculty are the best, and our students can see it every day.  I love the camaraderie, the fellowship, the humility, the high level of competence and the hard work I see all around me.  Every staff member teaches me something, each in their own unique and wonderful way.  I am thankful for Westmont in so many ways, and I can say that I love all those who make it so special.
