Jazzy Jorts

By Rosie Lu

Jeans, plus shorts… jorts! Perhaps one of the most polarizing fashion trends of the past few years, denim shorts—in particular, the baggy, knee-length variety—are seen as both frumpy dad-core and vintage chic. But really, all it takes is finding your fit and wash, and jorts can become a comfy and stylish summer staple!

For skeptics, the immediate mental image is either a tight, biker-style fit or an overwhelming swath of fabric that swallows the legs whole, making the wearer look like a renegade five-year-old. Avoiding both unfortunate pitfalls requires attention to the length, rise, and leg opening of the jorts.

Length depends largely on your proportions. Those with longer legs relative to their torso will find knee-length or below-knee styles most flattering, while shorter individuals may choose above-knee lengths to create the illusion of longer legs. Equally important is the rise; roomier low-rise fits are both trendy and infinitely more comfortable. A trick to nail low-waisted sizing is to measure your hips rather than your waist. Lastly, the leg opening should be 10 inches flat or above for ease of movement and a visually dynamic silhouette.

Styling is where jorts can truly come to life. The simplest approach is a fitted top, like a tank or baby tee, which will define the waist and balance out the figure. Contrasting aesthetics can also add an interesting touch—jorts can bring a more masculine, skater-style vibe, but a lacy cami or babydoll top creates a flattering juxtaposition. If you’re aiming to maximize comfort by going baggy-on-baggy, a simple tuck keeps the waistline from vanishing completely. Lastly, as you’ve probably heard a million times, don’t underestimate the power of accessories. A chunky belt, boho bangles, or a pair of classic frames can instantly elevate the most casual jort-centric look.

This summer, give the underappreciated and overhated jort a real chance—they might just become a new go-to in your warm-weather closet.
