I Almost Don’t Notice

By Averi Halbert

The sand leaves tiny cuts in my feet

So small I almost don’t notice

But I do

The waves crash onto the shore

Against giant rocks that have stood the test of time

Trying to take them down

Again and again

So useless I almost don’t notice

But I do

The foam slinks away

Carrying with it

The creatures that didn’t burrow into the sand in time

So insignificant I almost don’t notice

But I do

And thank god for that.
