In this technologically advanced world, many young children lack the foundational skills needed to develop a versatile vocabulary, largely due to limited reading. Rather than sitting down to read a book, children nowadays tend to turn to the artificially lit screen. Consequently, the United States, especially, is seeing a lack of proficiency in reading, speaking, and fluency in English.
Reading Guppies is a club at Westmont that focuses on exposing young children to the basic fundamentals of reading. All it takes for a child to develop a vocabulary is to hear a role model speak in English, read a book, or practice with them: Reading Guppies does just that. The club meets in Mr. Graydon’s room every other Thursday for interactive, informative instruction on how to be the best role model for these children in need.
