Artist Of The Issue: Sophia Voldseth

By Wesley Adams

How long have you been into making art?

“Ever since I was like 6 or 7 years old, no, like genuinely! When I was that age I started with pencil and marker drawings.”

What sparked your interest in creating?

“When I started making art I just wanted to create different characters and different universes with interesting outfits and such.”

How has your art medium of choice changed with time?

“I have found different mediums over time, each to create different things. I’ve also just gained or increased my skill, so I’m able to create things that require more skill.”

You create using multiple different mediums, what makes you branch out and start to use these different mediums?

“Taking an art class definitely helped me branch out on different mediums, if I haven’t taken that class then I probably would have just stuck to pencil drawings or digital art but now that I have the skills for different mediums I can be more creative with the art that I make.”

How has Gabriella Hopkins impacted your art journey?

*Laughter* “Um–I know she has many different projects and a lot of them require art which has pushed me to be more creative and involve more story and depth within the art. I began practicing with filmmaking which I have grown an interest to, and hope to possibly pursue that in the future. thanks to her projects. THANK YOU GABRIELLA HOPKINS!!!”

What’s your ultimate goal with making art

“Ultimately I would love to be a part of some sort of production, whether that means creating the costumes, the set design, or even directing the cinematography, or other aspects it takes to create a film or production”

Why didn’t you take tech theatre if this is something you’re so interested in?

“I didn’t knowww, I didn’t know! I didn’t know that was something I could do…” (Disappointed)

Do you hope to pursue a career in art?

“Nah.

I’m kidding, I’m kidding.

Like my previous answer I do want to pursue a career that involves some sort of live production, any visual aspects I’d love to be a part of.”

What’s the most meaningful thing you’ve ever made?

“I think the most meaningful thing that i’ve made were my rainbow loom creations because I feel like that showed my skill at a very young age and they’re just very nostalgic to me.”

What’s something you struggle with when it comes to creating

“I struggle with colors and mixing colors when painting, I struggle a lot with paint and color mixing, I can never get the right color and it’s always like two shades off, but I’m trying to get better at that.”

What are some of your inspirations?

“Pinterest is my biggest inspiration. I love Pinterest SO much, I also think storytelling and different kinds of stories are also inspiring because stories create visual images which can be so vast and creative.

Also for people my inspirations are Salvador Dali for painting, then Wes Anderson and Tim Burton for film.”

Do you have any advice to give?

“Umm… advice…

I think you shouldn’t be scared to try new things, things can seem scary at first but once you try it you’ll overcome that step of being scared and you’ll find that you’ll gain knowledge and new outlets to create.”

Where do you draw the line?

*laughter* “where do I draw the line….. There are so many lines to be drawn, you know with art and stuff, so I draw every line, everywhere. *More laughter* I think everyone should be drawing their lines.

You’re also into fashion and working with fabric, yarn, all that–say something on this.

Yeah, I agree, I do, that’s definitely true. I did crochet a Freddy Fazbear that took two whole weeks but I’m very proud of him. I also enjoy making other dolls and characters like Coraline and Celeste from Danganronpa.

Do you consider fashion part of your art?

I’d say yes my fashion choices are definitely artistic and I embrace my identity through fashion and I think fashion can mean so much to so many different people so I think fashion can mean so much to so many different people, and be very impactful.
