Visual Rags To Riches On The Red Carpet

By Kathryn Tanaka

In the midst of award season, many people take to social media to provide their commentary on the best (and worst) outfits seen on the red carpet. Whether it’s ill-fitting crushed blue velvet or a dream-like gauzy pink gown, users are sure to let celebrities know if their stylists ticked every box. While it’s common to see women dressed to the nines in everything from sleek styles to haute couture, it’s also typical to hear complaints about a lack of artistry in the garments men choose to wear, as the same black suits can be seen on countless men as they pose with their partners.

As the industry continues to evolve and social media dominates pop culture news, wearing outfits that aren’t the same old black-tie suit can help maintain intrigue among younger generations of fans. And sure, the burning vermilion trench coats worn by the likes of fashionistas like Wisdom Kaye are definitely not for everybody, but that shouldn’t stop celebrities from adding a bit of spice to the red carpet. A combination of patterns under a well-tailored black blazer, like Colman Domingo’s shirt scarf combo at the Grammys, provides visual intrigue, a break from the monotonous white button-ups scattered throughout venues. If the actual outfit can’t be changed, vibrant jewelry adorning hands, necks, and lapels works just as well.

Ultimately, the people are tired of seeing the unimaginative monotony of black and white suits (even if they’re well-tailored). From pops of color to pleasing patterns, there are so many ways to elevate one’s style on the red carpet.
