Best (Niche) Disney Channel Original Movies

By Kaia Costa

Being born in the late 2000s, I was introduced early to what I still consider true cinema: DCOMs—better known as Disney Channel Original Movies. Packed with swoon-worthy love stories, awkward growing pains, family drama, and messy friendships, these films helped shape an entire generation.

At six years old, I was completely smitten with Chad from High School Musical. But beyond the crushes, I fell in love with the music, the choreography, and the heartfelt lessons woven into every storyline. From niche gems to worldwide phenomena, Disney truly did it all.

Sure, High School Musical and Descendants have had their time in the spotlight. Now, it’s time to celebrate the underrated classics. Because nothing sparks nostalgia quite like the movies that defined our childhoods.

So without further ado, here’s my list of the best niche Disney Channel Original Movies.

  1. Princess Protection Program (2009)

Arguably the most underrated DCOM there ever was. Selena Gomez as your edgy teenage lead and Demi Lovato as a quirky princess, what more could you possibly ask for? I genuinely believe this movie altered my brain chemistry, and I would still watch it for entertainment to this day.

  1. Lemonade Mouth (2011)

Lemonade Mouth simply changed my life the first time I watched it. It follows a band made up of three boys and two girls who all meet in detention. Their stories? Completely different. Their fate, however, is entirely up to one another. And every single song is a masterpiece.

  1. Teen Beach Movie (2013)

Teen Beach Movie. Nothing can beat it. The storyline was genuinely ahead of its time—two lovers stuck inside a movie? Bikers vs. surfers? A full-blown battle for turf? With incredible visuals and unforgettable music, Ross Lynch and Maia Mitchell’s Teen Beach Movie remains one of the most memorable DCOMs out there.

  1. Invisible Sister (2015)

I might be biased, I love Paris Berelc in everything, but this movie is seriously underrated. I think it captures Halloween better than any other Disney movie (sorry, Girl vs. Monster). As a younger sister, I especially love the dynamic of two sisters who are complete opposites—with a little magic thrown in.

  1. Cloud 9 (2014)

No Disney movie has ever done a wintery/snow movie the way they did Cloud 9.  Dove Cameron is truly amazing in every Disney project she’s ever done. But I’m truly obsessed with her character development in this one. 10/10 recommendation.

  1. Bad Hair Day (2015)

I’m truly convinced no one else watched this movie except my sister and I, but it’s so unique and the plot is so entertaining. It sheds light on the struggles of being a teenage girl, and Laura Marano’s performance is so memorable.

  1. Zapped (2014)

I also thought this movie was way more popular until I realized so many of my friends haven’t seen it. Zendaya did her big one with this movie. I love how it has a different style, and cast than the usual DCOMs. Comical, whimsical, and fun!

  1. Radio  Rebel (2012)

You really think I could forget about THE Radio Rebel? This movie won 5 Golden Globes alone in my household. Where else would we get the legendary Debby Ryan lip bite?? That is all there is to be said.

  1. Frenemies (2012)

This one made the cut for me because of its nostalgic value. I wouldn’t say it’s as good as the others on this list as far as quality, but younger me adored it. The Bella Thorne and Zendaya duo was brought back to life once more in this iconic DCOM.

  1. Good Luck Charlie, It’s Christmas! (2011)

I wasn’t going to put any movies that were based off of Disney shows, but I truly couldn’t pass this one up. This is one you can watch in the middle of July, even if it’s a Christmas movie. Good Luck Charlie was ahead of its time all together, so if you don’t watch this, at least watch the show.
