expected to be a dame

By Mia Hanuska

“your words are professional, but your tone…
your tone and facial expressions are making them defensive”

oh, i’m sorry, was i being offensive?
oh, i’m sorry, was i being too intensive?
when i simply mirrored their actions,
now it’s my fault for their immature reactions?

no, it’s all on me,
not the men who are my age times three
not the men who expected me to grovel on my knees

they want me to sit quiet and pretty
while they ruin my hard work without any pity

“they’re from a different generation”
as if that excuses their lack of all consideration

no, no, no, don’t forget, i’m to blame
all because i won’t play their little game
all because i’m a girl expected to be a dame
