Grunge ruled the airwaves and college radio stations in the early ’90s, and is the music that brought alt-rock to the mainstream. I am a major fan of grunge music and its Pacific-Northwest roots. Here are my top 4 albums within the genre.
1. In Utero, Nirvana (1994)
The third and final album from Nirvana. After the explosive success of 1991’s Nevermind, Nirvana made an album with a less polished production and a gritty, loud sound, while also showcasing frontman Kurt Cobain’s poetic lyrics and raw, tuned-down sound. The product is an emotive and iconic grunge masterpiece from the voice of Generation X.

2. Ten, Pearl Jam (1991)
Ten is the Debut studio album from Seattle native band Pearl Jam. The lyrics on Ten are masterful, but singer Eddie Vedder’s voice articulates pure, raw, and beautiful emotion with the same, or even more power than the soaring guitars that hook you into every track.

3. Live Through This, Hole (1994)
Live Through This is the second album from the band Hole, founded by Courtney Love in 1989. The tracks on the album are all catchy and well-structured, but also angry and biting, with strong, confrontational lyrics that address the internal and external struggles of being a woman in the modern landscape, with Love’s lyrics touching on her own personal experiences.

4. Dirt, Alice In Chains (1992)
Alice in Chains’ second album, Dirt, is an emotionally heavy album that showcases grunge music at its peak. Heavy-metal guitars, stinging emotional choruses, and sludgy, layered rhythms create an intense, beautiful cornerstone of grunge rock.
