Artist of the Issue: Otra Phillips

If the senior class has one weapon, it’s Otra Phillips. From painting ASB banners by day to becoming an actress for the ages by night, Phillips is the definition of talented. She’s owned the stage in shows like Deadline and rocked the world in musicals like 9 to 5. She does it all with passion and creativity. What types of art do you enjoy producing?

“I enjoy producing social media and theatrical art. I also love producing art in my outfits.”

Have you received any awards for this art?

“Yes, I have received scholarships and superiors at the California state thespian festival.”

What is your favorite musical you have been a part of? 

“Footloose, but it’s gonna be SpongeBob. It’s gonna be really funny and a lot of fun. Super excited for the dances!”

Who is your biggest artistic inspiration?

“Denzel Washington, Tyler, The Creator, D. Deprey, I think that’s how you say his last name, Chadwick Boseman—fudge, I know there’s so many more. I love Tiffany Haddish, Kiki Palmer, and Blake Kim.”

Do you see a future in your art?

“Yes, I do see a future in my art. My art is my passion, and I am intending on pursuing acting outside of high school.”

What is the biggest challenge of being in theater?

My biggest challenge with being in theater is balancing memorizing lines and working on my characterization with regular schoolwork.
