Two Peas in a Pod

In any sport, team chemistry can make quite a difference. Lucky for the San Jose Sharks hockey team, the bond shines brightest between rookies Will Smith and Macklin Celebrini. Smith, drafted fourth overall in 2023, and Celebrini, the first overall pick in 2024, have quickly become not only the future of the franchise but also two of the closest friends in the NHL.

Their friendship started almost by accident. When they first met, Celebrini admitted their relationship was a bit rocky and that they “kind of hated each other”. But as they trained, traveled, and roomed together, their connection deepened. Now, teammates call them “two peas in a pod.” Whether it’s cracking jokes on team buses, making TikToks, or chirping at each other during practice, their friendship has become a defining feature of the Sharks’ locker room.

From eating dinner with veteran Joe Thornton’s family, hitting training sessions, or joining NHL stars like Sidney Crosby and Nathan MacKinnon in summer workouts, these two are truly inseparable. On the ice, their chemistry shows through seamless passing, quick reads, and a shared competitive edge. They push each other to improve, often staying late after practice to perfect their game.

Celebrini’s leadership and Smith’s creativity make them a dynamic duo that embodies the organization’s new direction towards trust and talent. If their bond continues to grow, it might just carry San Jose back into NHL playoff contention sooner than anyone expects.
