Thankful 4 Granny Hobbies

By Lucky Felder

When people hear the word “crochet,” they tend to think of a grandma knitting in her rocking chair. And while I agree, because grannies are clearly the masters of textile crafts, crochet is so much more.

I learned how to crochet when I was nine, and to this day, it’s the only hobby I’ve stuck with. It seems that every time I try my hand at a new project, I learn another stitch or technique, and I’m astonished at what a hook and a single skein of yarn can do. Just recently, I found out how to connect two strands of yarn using a lighter, which was by far the best solution I’ve stumbled upon while viewing crochet content. Full of immensely innovative crafters who share their ideas and record tutorials for others, the crochet community constantly inspires new creations.

What I most admire about crochet is its versatility. There are countless yarn textures, colors, prices, and weights to choose from, making it easy to execute your vision down to the very last detail. The smallest hooks are so tiny that you might require a magnifying glass to see them, while others are comically large. For beginners, the techniques are fairly easy to pick up, and with the knowledge of just two or three stitches under your belt, you will already be able to impress others with your pieces. Scarves, sweaters, blankets, and beanies are all obvious crochet staples, but beyond this it might surprise you to know how wild people can get with a hook in hand.

Here are some of my favorite pieces I have seen online:

– creepy lifelike baby

– tapestry crochet

– these adorable bunnies

Crochet is my go to relaxing activity, and I truly believe it makes the world a more colorful and lively place. Let us say thank you to the brilliant grannies who have passed down this wonderful art to so many, and appreciate the beauty of crochet!
