marginally vietnamese

By Emi Gruender

I’ve never known you

golden rod and silk willow
blushing fat-cheeked faces
the snackle of red-hot poppers
an irregular heartbeat

sweet smoke fills my nose
a village of discarded slippers
blue skies brushed across low ceilings
congested with incense’s syrupy breath

Đẹp quá!

I don’t eat, and i know they see
I’ve never known you

lì xì and elegant scarlet envelopes
the letters are just the same
Hemmed áo dài
Struggling snaps for broad shoulders

Đẹp quá!

I don’t speak like them, and i know they hear
I don’t eat, and i know they see
I’ve never known you
