As of recently, Jimmy Kimmel was suspended from his late-night show Jimmy Kimmel Live! The reason? A comment he made addressing the death of political activist Charlie Kirk, who was fatally shot on September 10, 2025. His comment regarding his death brewed intense debate and caused a shift in his audience. While supporters of Kirk expressed anger and devastation, others believed that Kimmel’s suspension was uncalled for and raised concerns about censorship and most importantly our First Amendment right.
The FCC’s reason for pulling Kimmel’s show was due to a controversial comment where he criticized Trump’s followers and mocked attempts to paint Kirk in a sympathetic way. He compares Trump’s mournful behavior to that of a kid who just lost their goldfish, calling it an act. Kirk’s supporters quickly called Kimmel’s comments inhumane and inappropriate. On the other hand, Kimmel’s supporters defended him and argued that his suspension was uncalled for and an attack on free speech. Critics of his suspension are pointing to the First Amendment which grants those in the US the rights to “freedom of speech, religion, press, assembly, and petitioning the government.” By penalizing Kimmel for making a political comment, many argue the FCC is creating a loophole between regulation and censorship. For many, late night shows are where they find comfort and it´s more than just entertainment; it creates a space for social commentary and satire. By removing Kimmel from air, it portrays the narrative that topics like these are not up for discussion.
