Grease Review

By Cambria Kelly and Rosie Lu

Grease, a dramatic rom-com, follows the aftermath of a summer romance between good-girl Sandy Olsson and delinquent Danny Zuko, who unexpectedly reunite at Rydell High. This movie was a light watch with countless hilarious moments, featuring both situational and spoken comedy. For instance, Danny’s lack of athleticism had us doubling over as he attempted to play sports, jealous of Sandy’s brief relationship with the football team captain. As avid music-listeners, we love the way the songs in Grease complement their respective scenes, adding to the overall drama of the movie. The ending accompaniment, “We Go Together,”  truly brought out the cheerfulness of the last day of school, while “Hopelessly Devoted to You” allows the audience to empathize with Sandy’s internal conflict. While the Cinderella-esque narrative of Grease touched our hearts, we found the derogatory themes quite disagreeable. To appeal to Danny, Sandy bids farewell to her naive, soft-hearted nature. In the final scene, her new form-fitting black leather look fully embodies the “bad girl” aesthetic, symbolizing a complete reconstruction of her character. Perhaps the filmmakers intended to depict mutual efforts at improving for the other in both characters. Still, Danny’s attempts to change for Sandy unravel the moment the changed Sandy enters the scene.
