The Future of Softball: AUSL

By Lucky Felder

For the past few years, college softball has been gaining popularity because of the passionate, dedicated players and the fast-paced nature of the sport. However, previous attempts at building a professional league for top players had not been so successful, due to lack of exposure, interest, and funding. It was difficult to compete with the dominance and budget of other sport leagues, which were already established. Stated simply, softball just didn’t have a big enough fan base—yet.

In June of 2025, the softball world was transformed. A new professional league, called the Athletes Unlimited Softball League (AUSL), was introduced. Aligned with big companies like Major League Baseball, Little League, and even Sephora, the future of softball was looking promising. For the first time, college softball players who invested their lives in the sport would have a larger stage where they could continue their career stably. Additionally, this expansion of softball was special for young girls around the world who dreamt of playing at the collegiate level. Watching the advanced athletes who inspire them is a great way to learn work ethic and sportsmanship.

So far, the league features four teams: the Bandits, Blaze, Talons, and Volts. Each consisting of 16 players, the regular season is based on these teams competing in 24 games, ending with an exciting best of three championship. This is followed by an individual tournament, the All-Star Cup. With a unique weekly redraft and individual points system, it’s an excellent way to highlight each athlete’s skills.

The AUSL gives hope to the future of softball, and it has opened the eyes of many, proving that softball is just as entertaining and intense as other sports—if not more. Through the passionate and driven girls that love softball, the sport will only continue to grow. The potential is truly unlimited!
