Once My Protector

By Logan Whiteson

As I watched you cross the stage

It was that moment I knew you were free

I knew it became my turn to gauge

When to choose her or me

For 16 years you were my protector

“I’m going to dad’s, you should come”

Were the words I’d use to keep me centered

So many arguments you shielded me from

My days of bliss had been long gone

But now the rage became directed at me

I wait and mourn as the days grow long

As I wish for the day I’m finally free
