When most people think of hockey, they see ice, skates, and a fast-paced game. But there’s an underwater version of this game where you’ll need flippers instead of skates; this game is known as underwater hockey.
Also known as Octopush, underwater hockey is a fast, intense team sport played at the bottom of a pool. Two teams of six players wear snorkels, fins, and gloves, using small sticks to push a puck across the pool floor and into the opposing team’s goal. Players hold their breath and dive repeatedly throughout the game. They work together with short bursts of energy to move the puck before reaching the surface to breathe. Underwater hockey is all about teamwork and quick thinking. Since you can’t talk underwater, players rely on hand signals, instincts, and strong communication between plunges back into the water.
Though it’s not as well-known in the U.S., underwater hockey has a global community, with popularity primarily centered in the UK. The sport originated in Portsmouth, England, in 1954 and has since gained worldwide attention. If you love swimming, enjoy high-energy games, or want to try something different, underwater hockey might be the thing for you. Just don’t forget your snorkel gear!
