Carried Through Senior Year

By Camilla Gelacio

When you walk through the halls of Westmont, it’s pretty normal to see students rocking the classic Jansport backpack; a high school staple. But now that senior year is coming to an end,  my friends and I decided it was time to switch things up. Out with the old, in with the new. In this article, I’ll be showing off the bags my friends and I bring to school, from trendy totes to stylish shoulder bags. These bags aren’t just for carrying our stuff, they’re a reflection of our personalities and our “we’re almost done” energy.

Starting off strong, we have my dear friend Aydin Akyol and his iconic “me espresso” backpack. This beauty features a photo of Aydin’s face inside a cup of coffee, referencing Sabrina Carpenter’s hit song Espresso and the viral lyric, “that’s that me espresso.” It’s unmistakably Aydin. This isn’t just a backpack, it’s an Aydin espresso.

Next in our lineup is the one and only amazing Ashwika Sankuratri with her royal princess backpack. While it may be hanging on by a thread (literally), this bag has carried her through the school year like a true champion; books, binders, and all. Will it survive until graduation? Only time will tell.

Up next is the stylish Sofia Grajeda with her summer themed tote bag. This trusty tote seems to have endless space, basically the high school version of Mary Poppins’ bag. Covered in waves, palm trees, fruits, and flowers, the vibrant design gives us all a taste of the summer we can’t wait for. It’s functional, fun, and totally Sofia.

Now we have the jolly Juri Kato, rocking her trendy Longchamp bag. These bags have made a major comeback, and Juri wears hers like a pro. It’s the perfect blend of fashion and function, elevating any outfit while carrying all her essentials. Reliable and timeless, this bag won’t just survive high school; it’s ready to go wherever Juri goes next.

Finally, we have my go to school bag: a classic Lululemon shopping bag. Sure, it’s not the most durable, it’s broken on me more than once, but I always come back to it. It’s light, convenient, and easy to toss over my shoulder between classes. Flawed? Absolutely. But nothing could ever make me hate this beat up beauty.

From princess backpacks to trendy totes and everything in between, our bags say just as much about us as our outfits do. Whether they’re falling apart or fashion forward, these bags have carried us, literally and figuratively, through senior year. One thing’s for sure: we’ll be graduating in style.
