As of 2024, global temperatures have risen, marking 2024 as the hottest year recorded. But, what does that mean? Yearly, there is a record warmth that is globally recorded. For the past century, we have seen rises in global warmth. Ecologists have identified that as sea levels rise, ice is melting faster than it should and global warmth accelerates at a much faster pace. We are to see warmer days than expected, but also, experience more unexpected storms. Yes, the climate crisis is real, but what can we do to help slow down all of these rapid changes? Although we are to blame for the acceleration of all these global catastrophes and changes, there are still things we as individuals can do to make changes for our communities. Yes, it will be impossible to make mass changes, but with effort, we can make changes for our future here in our community. Below I have listed a couple of ways we can ensure a better future for not only us, but for our planet who has given us everything.
- Consume less
To consume less is to realize we do not need doubles of everything. Yes, that new popular water cup is tempting to purchase, but if you already have a good and functional water bottle, there is no need to buy another. Did you know that 80% of water bottles and cups purchased end up in the landfill by the end of each year?
- Gravitate towards eco-friendly
Whether it be laundry detergent, dish soap, or any other household cleaning supply, try to buy eco-friendly. Majority of the products we use end up entering the environment and oftentime take a long time to fully filter out.
- Clean-up a park in your community
Although we may not realize it, our communities are full of wildlife. Here in Campbell, we are home to many parks that could use some clean-up. Majority of our parks are home to birds, plants, and other developing species. If we clean-up our community, we allow these species to thrive within our communities.
- Conserve Energy
When possible, turn lights off around your home that you do not use. Unplug appliances and electronics. Any amount of minimal effort will make a significant difference.
- Recycle
We are surrounded by many recycling centers. If we take charge in recycling our items and recycle all of them properly, we are helping make a difference.
- Waste less
Attempt to purchase good quality items and use what you have.
