Are the 49ers Doomed?

By Cameron Kobara

As the season came to an end with a loss to the Cardinals, the 49ers entered the off-season hoping that it would bring stability to the franchise. However, reality has sat in and the off-season is in full swing. What many thought would be an opportunity to make a comeback instead has been the 49ers suffering some huge losses. As of March 10th, the 49ers have departed with countless star players and are in ongoing contract negotiations with other teams. This along with some not-so-encouraging words from front office staff, makes the fans sit back and wonder, “Are the 49ers doomed?”

KEY DEPARTURES

On March first, 2025 The 49ers announced that star wide receiver, Deebo Samuel would be traded to the Washington Commanders in return for a fifth-round pick. Samuel, although coming off a disappointing season of 670 yards and three touchdowns, has been a crucial player in turning the 49ers around ever since being drafted by the team in 2019. Although clearing up major amounts of cap space, this loss leaves the 49ers with limited options in their receiving room. Alongside Deebo, the team witnessed the departures of Talanoa Hufanga, Charvarius Ward, and Dre Greenlaw as they were all taken in free agency. The gut-wrenching suffering of 49er fans didn’t stop there though, as fullback Kyle Juscyk was released later on the same day just as the fans started to relax.

Contract Negotiations

Besides the massively concerning aspects of the receiving room or the loss of countless high-ranking players on defense, the highlight of the off-season is the ongoing contract negotiations between Brock Purdy. Brock Purdy’s impressive success, going to two NFC championships and one Super Bowl in his 3 years with the team, warrants a major payday, as many experts expect the young quarterback to take a deal in the 55-60 million dollar range, officially making him the highest paid quarterback in the NFL. As of March 10th, there have been few updates regarding the negotiations; many wonder if this would shadow similar contract extensions from the past that have dragged out throughout the off-season coming from players like Deebo Samuel, Nick Bosa, and Brandon Aiyuk. It’s currently unclear where Purdy or his agents stand, but this decision by the front office will be something that could affect the team far down the line.

A Shift in Business

49ers owner Jed York has stated the front office is going to be a lot more “ruthless” during contract negotiations, which would be interesting to see, especially during a time when they have to negotiate with the quarterback that took them to back-to-back championship games and a Super Bowl, who’s in search of a major payday. York has also shown wishfulness for Head Coach Kyle Shanahan to focus on new scheme building this off-season, which is something to be fans will be looking forward to seeing.

But the real kicker is Jed York and John Lynch emphasizing that the 49ers will be “retooling” which honestly sounds like another word for “rebuilding”. Although the 49ers may not be as far down the gutter as other NFL teams, with the lack of receivers and the loss of many key players, things are not looking good for them. General Manager John Lynch has highlighted that the 49ers needed to get younger and more inexpensive—which was made quite clear during NFL free agency as we saw the release of many players. The 49ers seem to be shifting their objective; instead of going “all in” and building an expensive superteam, their goals seem to be getting young, talented players at a good price, which is a change that could set the 49ers back by at least a year as they let go of expensive players in attempts to acquire young star talent.

The truth is, the future is uncertain; the 49ers could be losing major players as the team starts to shift their goals and how things are operated. These changes could potentially set the 49ers back and with other aging players such as Geroge Kittle and Fred Warner, who knows how long the 49ers will be able to stay at the top of the NFC.
