As competition season approaches, Westmont’s very own Winter Guard passionately works towards their final debut at regional championships on March 29. Their current season’s show depicts the journey of a thunderstorm, including jaw-dropping tosses and intricate choreography that matches the performance’s intense energy.
However, what most people don’t see is the dedication the fourteen members display outside of rehearsal. Sharick Vargas Reyes, senior and third year member explains, “Performances outside of competitions are student-choreographed and organized by guard members, usually the captains or seniors.” This unique aspect of the team allows members to both lead and learn, fostering a collaborative and creative atmosphere.
For many, the team serves as a creative escape and second family. Junior Kayla Tu emphasizes her connection to the guard saying, “Winter guard means everything to me; without it, I would probably go insane with all my studies, and no ground to be myself.”
Overall, the team eagerly chips away at their show, pushing for flag, rifle, and sabre technique at every rehearsal. Be sure to support them at their upcoming competition on 2/8 at Independence High School!
