Over the years, social media has revolutionized the way we connect with one another. Apps like Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and Snapchat have made communication almost at the speed of light, enabling people to stay in touch from any continent. However, this digital revolution has fundamentally altered the dynamic of modern relationships, with many side effects going unnoticed.
Social media has undeniably given ways to nurture relationships. It bridges the gap between loved ones split by geography. Whether through video calling, texting, sending photos or videos, people can stay connected and still feel a sense of closeness despite physical distance. Additionally, social media has the beneficial ability to rekindle relationships, bringing people together in beautiful ways. According to a 2022 survey, 32% of adolescents believe that social media has positively impacted their lives. Online platforms fuel the growth of online communities where people with shared interests or struggles can come together. For instance, 70% of adolescent girls of color find race-affirming content on social media platforms. The majority of teenagers report feeling more accepted (58%), supported (67%), creative (71%), and connected with friends (80%) with the help of social media content.
While social media offers significant benefits, it also poses the ability to strain relationships. With a prevalent comparison culture, social media often showcases unrealistic photos and videos, leading users to compare their relationships to the unreasonable expectations they see onlines. With 13% of 12 through 17-year-olds reporting depression and 32% reporting anxiety, mental illness is a concern for adolescent health. Many studies have found an association between time spent on social media and symptoms of depression. The addictive nature of social media can detract from quality time spent with loved ones. A study in 2020 observed the effects of people deactivating their FaceBook account for a few months. Interestingly, they noticed a significant increase in their happiness and life satisfaction.
Social media has dramatically changed how we create and nurture these relationships–fostering incredible opportunities and challenges in the process. While social media opens up new avenues to keep in touch with old friends and make new ones, it also gives birth to situations that test the levels of trust and closeness. Mindfulness in using social media, setting limits, and focusing on real-life connections are ways to maximize its benefits and reduce its negative sides. Ultimately, the key to maintaining a relationship in the digital era is to find a balance between the virtual and real worlds.
