The Perfect Burger

By Cameron Kobara

Not many foods are as universally loved as burgers. Picture this: A soft, crisp toasted bun, cradling a juicy patty basted with butter and thyme, draped with a melted slice of cheese that hangs over the edges of the patty, complemented with diced onions, crispy bacon, juicy tomatoes, crisp lettuce, jalapenos, and a dollop of sauce. All of these components combine to create the perfect mouth-watering burger because a burger is more than just food, it’s a culinary experience. But what makes a burger so perfect? The perfect burger is made from a combination of fresh quality ingredients, thought-out preparation, and a little bit of creativity.

Many essential components go into the perfect burger

  1. The Bun

The bun is one of the most important parts of the burger. The bun is the foundation that keeps the harmony of a burger held together. The perfect bun should be soft yet sturdy, and slightly toasted for texture because nobody wants a soggy bun. My top three bun recommendations that will be perfect for you include, brioche, potato, or the classic sesame seed bun. Toasting the buns will add texture, prevent a soggy bun, and set the tone for the rest of your culinary intimacy.

  1. The Patty

The actual patty is the most difficult part of creating the perfect delectable burger. You must make sure the burger is constructed well, remains juicy, perfectly balanced, and generously seasoned with salt and pepper. If you don’t have a good patty then instead of leaving with a full belly and a fantastic experience, you’ll leave with sadness and despair. However, what makes a good patty?

First, take out a bowl and add the following ingredients: ground chuck with an 80/20 lean-fat ratio for the juiciest burger, crushed crackers, or panko bread crumbs. These will work as binders that keep the burger together to prevent it from collapsing. Next Worcestershire sauce, as this gives the burger a beefy and smoky flavor that heightens a patty’s magnificence. Next you must add a single egg, this, much like bread crumbs, helps bind the patty together while also preventing it from drying out.ext milk… the enzymes in milk help soften and tenderize the beef creating a more wonderful experience. Now, last but not least, SEASONING! Add in salt, pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, and other seasonings of choice. After all of that mixing, all of the ingredients will create the perfect appetizing patty.

  1. The Cheese

Cheese is where texture and flavor come together in perfect harmony — one of the most classic additions to a burger. American cheese melts perfectly on top of the patty providing a creamy taste, meanwhile swiss, cheddar and blue cheese provide your burger with added depth and complexity. It’s highly recommended that your cheese is added while your patty is still cooking. Place the cheese on the patty about 30-60 seconds before the patty is finished cooking in order to fully melt the cheese.

  1. Toppings

The toppings are the most versatile part of a burger. You can add or remove as many toppings as your heart desires. Toppings can give your burger a nice crunch, added spiciness, and a perfect combination of flavors that heighten your experience. Toppings being the most versatile step is up to your personal preference. However, some of my personal top choices include bacon, diced onions, jalapenos, and ketchup.

Now that we have the ingredients out of the way we can get into the actual cooking and assembling of the burger. Place the patty on the stove at high heat, and cook the patty for four minutes on each side to ensure that perfect sear. Make sure you do not flip or move the patty while it cooks, as this can mess up its cooking time and sear. With about 90 seconds left, add in half a stick of butter and baste the patty generously. With 30 seconds left, add the cheese on top of the burger and let it melt. You can tell if the patty is done if there is a clear juice coming out of the top of the patty before putting the cheese on.

Allow the patty to rest for around five minutes, as this is a crucial step in allowing the juices inside the patty to distribute throughout the meat. Cutting or eating the patty immediately after can cause juices to spill out, leaving a soggy, runny mess and a dry patty. Place your patty on your toasted bun, followed by your toppings of choice. Make sure the toppings are evenly spread out across the burger to have a satisfying taste with each bite.

No two people view the word “perfect” as the same thing. Some may enjoy a classic cheeseburger with nothing but meat and cheese, while others may like their burger with a multitude of toppings and flavors. Furthermore, there are many types of patties such as the California style or smash burgers, but, no matter how you view your burger as “perfect” we can all agree that burgers are a classic American staple that should be enjoyed and appreciated by people all over the world.
